    在德国太阳能已被广泛应用。
In Germany solar energy is been widely used.

Thats my take on the above sentence, but I am not a native speaker nor hardly an expert. However,
I was under the impression that it could only be read as "has been widely used" if the 已 were
replaced by 过. Does "已" denote the present perfect?

    Quest -

    已经 adverb. already
    被...应用 verb. passive. utilized

    skylee -

You cannot replace 已 with 經 in the sentence you quoted. You can however replaced 已 with
    已經. They mean the same.

已 and 已經 mean that something has already happened.

    James Garrison -

Okay, 已经 means the present perfect. I guess since Chinese isn't as strict as English I could
also interpret 已经 as the past simple? 过, however, is always the present perfect, right? How
do 已经 and 过 differ in use?

Argh. I wish grammar had a face so I could slap it, hahaha.

    skylee -

    Take a look ->

    已/已經

    Quote:

    Already: 已經 [yi3jing1]↓;
    已去,已來 already gone, come;
    會已散meeting already closed;
    已久 already a long time;
    已亡 already dead;
已冠 over twenty years of age (“already capped”).

    Quote:

    Used to express a completed action (pr. ’[guo1]): 讀過 have read about it;
    聽說過 have heard of it;
    看見過 have seen it;
    吃過了 have had one's meal;
    打過招呼 have said hello to s.o.;
遞過暗號 have given s.o. a secret signal.

Look at it this way: 已/已經 is an adverb, it is used like "already" in English, and is put
before the verb. 過 is like a suffix to turn a verb to describe a past action, and is put after
    the verb.

    Altair -

    Quote:

    Absolutely!

    Quote:

Okay, 已经 means the present perfect. I guess since Chinese isn't as strict as English I could
also interpret 已经 as the past simple? 过, however, is always the present perfect, right? How
do 已经 and 过 differ in use?

I think that terms like "present perfect" and "past simple" apply very well to English, to many
other European languages, and to a few other languages; however, I think these categories are
extremely awkward in reference to Chinese and will cause confusion. There are many different
Chinese structures than can correspond to what we in English call "present perfect" or "past
simple," because Chinese makes different distinctions than we do in English. Neither language is
more strict than the other, they are just strict about different things.

As for 已经 basically meaning "already," I believe this is correct; however, there are
occasional uses where it merely seems to suggest completeness or change and where we would not use
"already" in English. Here is an example of the latter usage:
    清圣祖虽是少年天子、但天资聪慧、机智过人、平素努力学习历代统治经略
已经逐渐成熟。Kangxi (The Qing Emperor Shengzu), although he was a young emperor, was
naturally intelligent and exceptionally resourceful. He usually worked hard in studying the
governing strategies of the past dynasties and gradually matured.

    here we started a thread: http://www. /showthread.php?t=17287
    and here

and there are probably a ton of books on them too. Even online you can just search 多音字 Have
    fun....

    heifeng -

wow, you guys answer fast...I thought I was gonna be able to post first on one of my favorite
    topics ...hehe

    aimee08 -

    oh thank you so much!!!!
I didn't know they are called 多音字, so I couldn't search if there were already open thread,
    sorry.

    skylee -

Here is a list in simplified Chinese with 243 (if I count right) 多音字 in doc format -
    常用多音字规范表 ->
    http://www.lbx777.com/ywfj/ywcs/wz/images/cydyz01.doc

I note that 着 and 著 are two separate entries on this list. hmmm ...

    aimee08 -

    thanks skylee, that's perfect

    roddy -

    Attaching two files.

The .doc file is a simple list of the 108 多音字 in the link above suitable for importing into
your preferred flashcard program (although how that flashcard program handles 多音字 is another
    matter).

The .txt is a Plecodict friendly list of all words in the increasingly laggard HSK database which
contain any one of those 多音字. Bear in mind that some 多音字 may only have one
pronunciation within the HSK lists - all of those words will still be included. Eg 单 results in
简单 etc appearing, although the shàn version doesn't.

I would probably have been wiser to use the longer list of 243 to generate this, but I happened to
be looking at the shorter one of 108 when I started thinking about this. If anyone wants to come
up with or find a clean list of the 243 that I can just plug into the database I'll be able to
generate a more complete list of associated words. What also might be useful is a list of
多音字 within the scope of the HSK.

The Pleco format, in case anyone wants to convert it to something else, is just

    // LIST NAME
    CharsPin1yin1
    CharsPin1yin1

    roddy -

    Attaching:
A list of all characters in the 现代汉语常用多音字词例, one entry per pronunciation.
About 300 characters, just under 700 pronunciations. There's a 次常用多音字词例 also,
about one third of the length. Will post that if / when I do it. For reference the
现代汉语常用字表 (ie not just 多音字) is about 2,500 characters, the 次常用 1,000.

It's called a 词例 as there's a third column, with lists of words for each pronunciation, or an
explanation, which I haven't typed in, and don't plan to if importing into Plecodict has decent
results (which is why I have one entry per pronunciation, rather than multiple pronunciations per
    line)

The list does some odd stuff, eg omits huǐ for 会, includes a neutral tone 点 because of 打点
but not for similar words, etc.

Well... I have a new version of the Windows error... I have been trying to run the program on a
Chinese version of Windows XP SP2... when I try to start the program... all I get is a black dos
window and then a error message saying that it is going to close.

I tried to do the workaround, but I cannot identify what is the option... and cannot find anything
indicating a US version of unicode. Any other suggestions about what to do?

I've tried installing SGC on the latest Debian but the process tells me that I need libzip.so.1.
Libzip.so.1 isn't available in any of the Debian repositories. I could try and install a rpm of

I would have been very interested to see that article differentiate between the Hong Kong and the
Mainland's CURRENT legal market more clearly - they simply cannot be considered as one "Chinese"
unit yet, even if firms do "aggregate" the performances of their offices in their figures.

Here are some examples of the work that one of the big UK firms is doing in mainland China:

very interesting thread! just stumbled on it now. id have to say that i somewhat agree with the
economist article, although its not always that black and white as the article paints it to be.
learning chinese (or any foreign language for that matter) is not a be all and end all, it will
still largely depend on each person's context ( as all of you gave excellent examples of) and how
a person uses that skill to his/her advantage.

    dan ni er -

I disagree with a lot of what has been said here. I work for one of the large accountancy firms
and all the positions they advertise to non-Chinese nationals require proficiency in Mandarin. If
you want to work in China, unless you're a partner, it's absolutely essential in my opinion.

    roddy -

Dan ni er, and anyone else in similar situations - how easy do your companies find it to get
foreign staff with Chinese proficiency and whatever professional skills / qualifications your
sector requires. Are there lots of Mandarin-fluent qualified lawyers and accountants floating
around, or do you end up employing people who have 'fluent' on their resume but end up saying
    things like '请给我end-of-month report'?

    rob07 -

I work for a leading Australian law firm that aims to be a leading Asian regional firm, and has
offices in Shanghai and Beijing comparable in size to some of the largest UK and US firms.

They regularly hold presentations and send out firm-wide encouraging people to apply to work in
their Asian offices, including Shanghai and Beijing. If you have two or three years of experience
in a transferable area like M&A, they have made it very clear that no language skills at all are
required as a lot of the work is done in English and they employ several full time translators.

    dan ni er -

Roddy in answer to your question, from what I can tell there are some fluent mandarin lawyers and
accountants, however, I think they're mostly ABCs, BBCs etc. I suppose it would be difficult for
someone who didn't grow I speaking chinese at home, to reach fluency in Chinese and manage to fit
in getting a professional qualification along the way.

In reality, you are correct that the Chinese speaking foreigners end up saying stuff like "qing
gei wo nei ge annual report". But I think most chinese would say that too these days!

Rob7 - I suppose if your firm has full time translators then working in China would be a lot
easier, but I suppose M&A is a very international area of law. It may be a lot harder if you
specialised in say trade & customs, where meetings with the local government authorities would be
    conducted in Chinese.

    venture160 -

as for working at a law firm... I think at the top international law firms here in Beijing a good
half of the partners speak decent Chinese. As for legal assistants, usually a partner has a team
of assistants, of which maybe 1-3 are foreign, of which usually 30% have good Chinese. If you are
22-27, have decent Chinese (including reading) and are a graduate from a western university
finding a job paying 20K rmb a month shouldn't be a problem. But don't forget you will NEVER get
off work before 7pm and will work weekends. you will be owned. This is coming from friends of mine
    who work in law firms.

    dan ni er -

Without meaning to digress, 20K for a chinese speaking foreign lawyer seems very low. I would have
thought it would at least be double that for someone with a couple of years experience behind them.

    venture160 -

well they are legal assistants not an actual lawyer or partner

Would love to have the lyrics, preferably in pinyin. Or traditional characters; at least now I've

Hello, I've tried to search Google for TOEFL flashcards much like the HSK flashcards that I'm
currently studying with the Mnemosyne software, but for English words with the explanations in
Chinese. This is for my girlfriend who is a China girl.

I would teach her English myself, but my work keeps me busy so I would like her to study on her
free time when I'm at work. Does anyone know if theres a good place to download these or if they
    exist? I'd really appreciate it.

I don't know if there are such flashcards for TOEFL, or whether TOEFL has a standard list of
vocabulary, like the HSK does. I know, however, that there are word lists for the GRE Verbal
floating around China (the infamous red book), so there could be some for TOEFL too.

I would recommend asking university students, especially the ones who are interested in studying
abroad. If there is something, they'll know.

    Quest -

    It can mean "this".
    先谢了。

    Han-tiger -

該(该),has several meanings and can be combined with other characters to form a phrase.

    A. “该” , short for “应该”, means “should/ought to”.
    For example, 你应该努力学习了。 你该努力学习了。

    B. “该”, means “this”.

    C. “该”, means “be one's turn to do sth”.
For Example, “In a class, a teacher asked his students to tell a joke one by one. You were the
fifth student to do it. When the fourth finished, the teacher said to you, Hey, 82riceballs,
    该你了! / or该你讲了! /or 该你讲笑话了!”

    D. “活该”, means deserve.
    For Example, 你活该!You deserve it!

    E. “该死”, means damn it.
For Example, one day you invited your girlfriend to have dinner together in a beautiful
restaurant. When you both finished the meal, you said to your girlfriend,
    “该死!我今天忘记带钱包了!”

A quick search on a few Wing Chun sites however reveals that it is the same 馬, so I guess it's
    probably a style-by-style difference, or maybe a north/south difference.

Sometimes I see 这 written with 2 dots over the radical and sometimes it is only one. In Pleco it
has 2 dots (but not in the magnified frame) and in other places it has only one. Pleco isn't the
only place I've seen this (HanziHelper has it too, but only when you print out character practice
sheets). Is it a variation or is it an error?

Which radical? I just checked my pleco and there isn't two dots (at all). Not sure what it is that

    skylee -

The difference may be due to different print fonts.

As far as I know, this is how the character should be written ->
    http://www.csulb.edu/~txie/azi/d5e2j.gif

    OneEye -

Skylee, I think that's what it is. Some of the characters look like different characters in Pleco
than in other fonts. 还 is another, and 着. I think some of them have to do with the size of the
fonts, so certain strokes don't show up or they get distorted. I'll have to tinker with it (just
    got Pleco two days ago).

What it's saying is that the current generation will never be able to compare with the last
generation. The way the last generation did it, there make-up and such (I'm paraphrasing) has gone
    and will not come back.

It's kind of like saying it can never be as good as the original.

Hope that makes sense! (does it?)

    Alvinho -

I'm aiming at learning Chinese mandarin next year.....until next year's march I gotta enhance both
English and Spanish......after that I want to study another language along with Chinese but I
haven't decided which one will be yet....

However, about Chinese firstly I'd like to know some basic sentesies used in everyday life......it
would be nice to start off the language with those basic tips...

If there's someone who's interested in helping me I'd be glad......no matter if either there are
chinese or foreign people who master the language.

My MSN is geodorneles@yahoo.com for those who are keen on chatting with me....

    我爱喝啤酒 -

New here, hi all. I've racked my brain trying to do this translation, and it all is too awkward to
me to translate, why I don't know. If you could help with a couple sentences, I'd appreciate. I'll
show you the non-sense I've come up with...

    北京领导人胡锦涛筹画近一年的对台斗争策略终于登台亮相,其运作轮廓正
    陆续浮现,虽然这些仍只是其中一小部分,但灵活程度已令许多观察家跌
    眼镜。

The document Beijing's leader, Hu Jintao, has prepared for close to a year finally takes the
stage. His operation outlines emerge one after the other, although these are still only a small
part, but flexibility has made many observers unsuccessful. [complete non-sense]

Exhaustion of the CCP in the past has excelled in concealing the United Front's struggle,
nevertheless unable to pull Chen Shui Bian. This type of melancholy mood on May 17th at the Office
of Taiwan Affairs, the Office of Taiwan Affairs current cross-strait relations statement is
completely uninhibited. There's a saying, "Chinese people can't fear ghosts, they don't believe in
    them," ........

I don't even understand the last part. As you can see, I have a small indication of what in the
world is going on, but clearly, it's non-sense. Can someone please help me. Thank you!

    My attempt -

The strategy against Taiwan which has been planned for nearly a year by Hu Jintao, leader of the
Beijing regime, has at last shown its face. The operation framework is becoming clear. Although
what can be seen is only a small part of the plan, its flexibility has surprised many observers.

    My attempt -

Having exhausted all the propaganda manoeuvres in the background which the Communist Party was so
good at in the past, Chen Shui Bian was yet to be brought down. The disappointment was obvious in
the statement on the current cross-strait relations made by Taiwan Affairs Office of CPC Central
Committee and Taiwan Affairs Office of State Council on 15 May. The statement "The Chinese people
are not afraid of ghosts, nor will they be intimidated by brutal force" showed clearly the dilemma
faced by Beijing at that time.

Learn mandarin - Learn Chinese - FAQ: General Forum Usage

    .

    .

Learn Chinese > FAQ > Learn Mandarin. When you have
finished typing your message, press the [send email] button and your message will be sent
instantly. Note that for privacy reasons, the email address of the recipient is not revealed to
    you during this process.

Note that if you can not find an email button or link for a member, it either means that the
administrator has disabled email functions for this forum, or that the member in question has
specified that they do not wish to receive email from other members of the forum.

Another useful email function is the ability to send a friend a link to a thread you think they
may find interesting. Whenever you view a thread, you will find a link somewhere on the page which
will allow you to send a brief message to anyone you like. Your referrerid is added to the link
you send, so if your friend registers on this forum as a result of viewing the link you sent to
them, your referrals total will automatically be credited!

Registered members may also be able to send messages to other members of this forum using the
private messaging system. For more information about private messaging, click here.

    What is Private Messaging?

If the administrator has enabled the Private Messaging system, registered members may send each
    other private messages.

    Sending Private Messages

Private messages work a little like email, but are limited to registered members of this forum.
You may be able to include vB Code, smilies and images in private messages that you send.

You may send a private message to a member of this forum by clicking the 'Send A Private Message'
link in the private messaging section of your user control panel, or by clicking the button in a
    member's posts.

When you send a message, you have the option to save a copy of the message in your Sent Items
    folder.

    Private Message Folders

By default, you will have two folders in your private message area. These are the Inbox and the
    Sent Items folders.

The Inbox folder contains any new messages you receive, and allows you to view all the messages
you have received, along with the name of the person who sent the message to you, and the date and
    time the message was sent.

The Sent Items folder contains a copy of any messages that you have sent, where you have specified
that you wish to keep a copy of the message for future reference.

You may create additional folders for your messages by clicking the 'Edit Folders' link.

Each folder has a set of message controls which allow you to select messages, then either move
them to one of your custom folders, or delete them completely. You may also have a button which
allows you to forward multiple messages from a folder to another member of the forum.

You will need to periodically delete old messages, as the administrator has probably set a limit
to the number of private messages you can have in your folders. If you exceed the number of
messages specified by the administrator, you will not be able to send or receive new messages
until you delete some old messages.

Whenever you read a message, you will have the option to reply to the message, or forward that
message to another member of the forum. You may also have the ability to forward that message to
multiple members of your buddy list.

    Message Tracking

When you send a new private message, you may have the option to request a read-receipt for that
message. This will allow you to check whether or not a message has been read by its recipient by
viewing the Private Message Tracking page.

This page is divided into two sections: unread messages and read messages.

The unread messages section shows all messages that you have sent with a read-receipt request,
that have not yet been read by their recipient.

The read messages section shows all messages you have sent with a receipt request that have been
read and acknowledged by their recipient. The time that the message was read is also shown.

You may choose to end the tracking on any message you choose by selecting the message and clicking
    the [end tracking] button.

When you receive a message with a read-receipt request, you may have the option to read the
message while denying the read-receipt request. To do this, simply click the 'deny receipt' link
rather than the title of the message, if it appears.

How do I use the Member List?

The member list contains a complete list of all the registered members of this forum. You can view
the member list ordered alphabetically by username, by the date that the member joined the forum,
or by the number of posts the members have made.

The member list also has a search function, which allows you to quickly locate members according
to categories you specify, such as searching for all members who have joined in the past week etc.

How do I use the calendar?

The calendar functions in a way similar to the forums in that there can be multiple calendars. One
calendar could hold just events that you are able to see, while another may list birthdays.

There are two types of events on the calendar: normal events and recurring events.

Normal Events span the time frame from when the event starts until the event ends.

Recurring Events repeat over a set period of time based on certain criteria. Examples would be an
event that occurs on the first Monday of every month and an event that occurs every Monday and
    Wednesday.

The administrator may have enabled registered members to post events, but usually this is not the
case. You can most likely post your own private events that are only viewable to you.

Birthdays may be shown on the calendar if the administrator has enabled this feature. Your
birthday will automatically be shown on the calendar if you have entered the date of your birthday
in your profile. Note: if you do not enter the year of your birth when you edit your profile, your
age will not be shown on the calendar.

If you enter your birthday, your name will also appear on the main forum page when it is your
    birthday.

    What are announcements?

Announcements are special messages posted by the administrator or moderators. They are designed to
be a simple one-way communication with the users. If you wish to discuss announcements, you will
have to create a new thread in the forum, since you cannot reply to announcements.

How do I rate a thread?

You may find a small menu on thread pages which allows you to 'rate this thread' with a number
    between 1-5.

Casting a vote for threads you view is entirely optional, but if you think that the thread is
superb, you might rate it as a 5-star thread, or if you think that it's unspeakably dismal, you
might choose to rate the thread with a single star.

Once enough votes have been cast for the thread rating, you may see a set of stars appear with the
title of the thread in the thread listings. These stars reflect the average vote cast, and can
allow you to quickly see which threads are worth reading if you are on a very busy forum with a
    lot of threads.

    What are referrals?

The administrator may have enabled referrals, which allows you to be credited for any new users
    you invite to the forum.

You gain referrals by promoting Learn Chinese using your unique referral link. The link you
should use as your referral link is this:

    http://www.Learn Chinese/forums.php?referrerid=0

Each time someone follows this link to Learn Chinese and registers as a new member, your
referral count will be incremented by one. The number of referrals you have can be viewed in your
    profile.

Your administrator will have more information on any prizes or rewards that may be given out for
referrals. Please be courteous when promoting Learn Chinese by not spamming other web sites
with your referral link just to gain referrals.

What are the various thread display options?
When viewing a thread, you will be able to view the thread from a choice of four modes.

    1. Linear Mode (Oldest First) - In this mode, posts are displayed chronologically from oldest
to newest. Posts are shown in a flat mode so that many posts can be viewed simultaneously.
    2. Linear Mode (Newest First) - This is the same as the above mode, except that posts are
ordered in an opposite way (newest first).
    3. Threaded Mode - In this mode, a tree is shown along with every post. This tree allows you to
see the relationship each post has to others, in terms of who responded to whom. Only one post
    is shown at a time.
    4. Hybrid Mode - This mode is a mixture of the linear and threaded modes. The post tree is
displayed like in the threaded mode, but multiple posts are displayed simultaneously like in
    the linear modes.

Where can I find the RSS feed?

The administrator may have enabled RSS syndication, this allows you to view newly created threads
in guest viewable forums without visiting the board.

The feeds are currently provided in two formats, RSS and RSS v2. The differences are as follows:

    * RSS 0.91 - This feed is based on a standard written by netscape and provides a link and the
    title of the thread.
    http://www.Learn Chinese/external.php?type=rss
    * RSS 2.0 - This feed contains title, author, date and the contents of the first post of the
    thread.
    http://www.Learn Chinese/external.php?type=rss2

To add this to MyYahoo click here.

The forums to which this applies can also be limited to specific guest viewable forums by adding
another parameter to the URL containing the forumids as follows:
    http://www.Learn Chinese/external.php?type=rss2&forumids=123

If you would like the content to be generated for multiple forums you can separate the forumids by
    commas.
