Chinese School - Folk art lights up the Beijing Olympics

Folk art lights up the Beijing Olympics

    ( 2008-08-05 )

On August 2, on the second floor of building A in the 2008 International Media Center, 10 Chinese folk artists brought their handicrafts to an exhibition hall. Their unique Chinese folk art show attracted many Chinese and foreign reporters alike.

One of the folk artists, Sun Lingmin, white-haired with age, undoubtedly received the most attention from foreign reporters. His kites, made in all different sizes, were displayed on the 34 square meter stage. Sun Lingmin patiently explained that "best wishes and blessings" are a longstanding
Chinese tradition, and kite designs are themed on folk sayings, folk tales, and historical quotes. Through metaphors, double meanings, symbolism, and onomatopoeia, they express people's wish for a good life.

Sun Lingmin explained the kites as he gave demonstrations. "The process of making kites is very complicated. It includes cutting and binding bamboo, applying adhesive, putting on a protective coat, dyeing it, and more. Chinese culture is so broad and deep that it is hard for one to absorb it all."
A foreign journalist who was taking a photo gave a sigh.

An energetic and outgoing woman, Liu Ren was surrounded by reporters as she displayed her paper cuttings. Liu Yang, a volunteer from Capital Normal University, became Liu Ren's new "disciple" that day. "How is it learning with a master " a reporter asked. Liu Yang replied in embarrassment, "It
looks easy, but it's really hard to do! The only thing I can make is an apple."

Wearing a pink Chinese style top, Liu Ren warmly invited every reporter looking at her paper cuttings to visit her paper-cut museum in a hutong near Xinwenhua Jie at Xidan. "This is Beijing's first privately run paper-cut museum," she said proudly. In the past 9 years, this unique museum has
already received visitors from all over China and more than 30 countries and regions. It has become a window displaying the Chinese folk art of paper cutting. Liu Ren has already tried to use paper-cuts to depict athletic competitions at the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing. She hopes that through
the Olympics, more people from other countries will come to appreciate Chinese folk art.

Yu Guangjun uses magnolias, cicada shells, and other materials to create monkeys, earning him round after round of applause from his audience. He explained the history of his craft: "These monkeys were made by a clerk working in an herbal medicine shop in Beijing, but he didn't intend them to be
anything special. When the shopkeeper saw, he thought the clerk's creations were very intriguing, and moreover they combined four types of Chinese medicine, so he sold them as products. Thus, these monkeys became a type of folk art tradition." They were popular toys in the history of old Beijing,
but they almost disappeared for a considerable period of time. "We are explaining this craft here so that it will not be buried under modern day toys that flash and make sounds," Yu Guangjun said.

One of Yu's creations called "It's the New Year!" drew much attention. In it, ten monkeys are carrying water and firewood or cleaning the house, preparing to celebrate the New Year.

"How long does it take to make one of these " a journalist from Turkey asked in amazement.

    "One month," Yu Guangjun replied.

Chinese Speaking - Craftworks of Beijing

    Craftworks of Beijing

    ( 2008-07-10 )

Because it was the ancient cultural city of China, there are many consummate skills handed down from generation to generation, such as cloisonné, ivory carving and jade carving. These craftworks distinguished by their dense eastern style are the best choice of souvenir for the visitors. You can
pick up one or two of them for yourself or friends from antique markets or feature shops in Beijing.

    Artificial Flower

The Artificial Flower, or Juan Hua in Chinese, has been a traditional handicraft since ancient times. As early as the Tang Dynasty (618-907), women began to wear artificial flowers on their hair as decoration. And the middle of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) was a booming time for this folk art. These
vivid flowers are made from all kinds of colorful silks by skilled craftsmen. As a result of thousands of years' development, there are now over 2,000 kinds of artificial flowers, including the fireproof garland mounted on a candleholder and the waterproof flower branch. As well as artificial
flowers, the craftsmen can make dolls from silk. The colorful dolls with a variety of designs are also very popular.

    Cloisonne

Cloisonne, or Jing Tai Lan in Chinese, which is also known as enamel is a kind of copper craftwork. It first appeared in Beijing in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and prevailed during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Cloisonne is a perfect combination of copper and porcelain. It is made by using copper
as the basal material with brass wires fixed to the body of the copper in some designs. Then blue glaze is applied to the brass wire. After a series of complex procedures, such as burning, burnishing and gilding, the cloisonne is done. This process can be used to make articles such as headgears,
lamps, smoking sets and other vessels of all shapes and sizes.

    Dough Figurine

Dough Figurine, or Mian Ren in Chinese, is a simple folk handicraft demonstrating high artistic quality. It has a history over 1,340 years. The vivid figurine is made by skilled craftsmen from sticky rice dough mixed with pigments, honey and olefin. After cutting, slashing, pinching and twisting
the dough, a lifelike child, beautiful girl or other creations will come out in the twinkling of an eye. You can witness the craftsmen making dough figurines along the exhibition streets in Beijing and you will be astonished by their excellent skills.

    Ivory Carving

Ivory Carving, or Ya Diao in Chinese, in Beijing enjoys a history of as many as 3,000 years. The excellent techniques and well-developed imagination of the skilled craftsmen give the ivory a new life with their knives. It is an exquisite and delicate craftwork that is loved by people at the first
sight. In ancient times, the Chinese emperors regarded the ivory carving as a royal tribute. Because ivory is now in short supply and there are fewer young craftsmen, ivory carving may soon be a lost art.

    Jade

Jade has been considered the king of the precious stones by Chinese for over 5,000 years. It is regarded as an auspicious thing standing for goodliness, heavenliness and preciousness. In ancient times, people wore jade to show their status and position on society. There are lots of craftsmen with
a high level of skill in Jade Carving. The jade vase, figurine, bird, animals and flowers are so well-made that they appear lifelike.

    Silk Road

    ( 2008-07-09 )

The Silk Road winds its way through numerous lands and deserts, colorfully stretching its way through the civilizations of Asia, Europe and Africa. It was through the Silk Road that the four great ancient Chinese inventions of papermaking, gunpowder, the compass and printing were diffused across
the world. Likewise, breathtakingly splendid silk production, Chinese tea and porcelain were also spread throughout the globe. The exchanges of material culture along went both ways, with Europe also exporting a wide range of goods and plants to meet the demands of the Chinese market.

The Origins of the Silk Road

The German geographer F. Von Richtofen coined the term “Silk Road” in 1877. It refers to the major trade route linking China with Southwestern and Central Asia and India. Starting during the Han Dynasty (202 BC-220 AD), this route was used to transport a variety of trade goods, of which silk
was the most important. The Silk Road originates in the Chinese interior, passes through Northwestern China, and continues west across Asia. Providing links with ancient overland routes to Africa and Europe, the Silk Road paved the way for extensive political, economic, and cultural exchanges
among widely separated regions and ethnic groups.

China was the first country in the ancient world to cultivate the mulberry plant, raise silkworms, and produce silk items. To the present day, silk remains one of China's greatest offerings to the peoples of the world, surpassing every other Chinese product in the scope of its distribution.
Although trade in various other Chinese products was concentrated along roads known the "Jade Road," "Gem Road," "Buddhist Road," and "Porcelain Road," in actuality these routes represented only individual segments of the Silk Road. In the end, this great artery of commerce and exchange will
always be known for its most important product, silk.

    Weightlifting

    ( 2008-07-08 )

Weightlifting is an ancient sport in China. People in ancient times paid great attention to the exercise of strength. A great variety of contests of strength have been recorded in Chinese history books. As early as the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States periods (770 -221 BC), two forms of
weightlifting contest called "qiao guan" and "kang ding or ju ding" had taken shape.

"Qiao guan" was a kind of weightlifting in which "guan," a heavy door bar, was lifted by a man grasping it by one end with a single hand. "Qiao guan" remained in vogue up till the Tang Dynasty (618 -907), but it was then no longer a contest of strength among imperial court warriors. Instead, it
became a subject of cadet examinations, and door bars were replaced by weights that were made according to prescribed specifications.

In "kang ding or ju ding," a meat-cooking vessel, or "ding," was lifted by holding its two loop handles. "Kang ding" was most widely practised in the State of Qin, where a famous muscle man named Wuhuo reportedly lifted a vessel weighing 500 kilograms. Professional "kang ding / ju ding" activities
began to appear in the Han Dynasty (206 BC -AD 220), along with other forms of weightlifting such as pulling up a tree and lifting a deer.

Stone objects weighing 100, 125 and 150 kilograms came into use in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644 -1911) dynasties. As stone objects were easy to make and popularize, weightlifting using stone locks and stone bars became a traditional sport among the populace.

Kungfu Show: The Legend of Kungfu

The average performer is only 17 years old; they are young martial arts talents from all over China. They imitate certain animals in fierce fighting, including frogs, tigers and snakes, and reveal the ancient art of shadow boxing. The show also promises a number of eye-popping stunts, like
smashing iron tablets over heads, and hitting people with thick wooden sticks. "

The Legend of Kungfu” was previewed in July 2004 and premiered on December 3, 2004. Up to now, the show has accomplished more than 2000 performances in the Beijing Red Theatre. It is still popular, boasting a 98%-full house every evening. Many visitors thought it was the unsurpassed show they
had seen in China. Mohamed Jaidah, a visitor from Qatar, came to see the show 3 nights running, and thought it was simply "a stunning experience."

In 2005, the show was inaugurated into ‘the National Instructional Index for Commercial Cultural Products of Performing Arts and Exhibitions of the Year’ by the Ministry of Culture of China. The Legend of Kungfu had its first North America tour from August 2005 to January 2006. During that
time, it played 150 performances in Vancouver, Toronto, Reno and other North American cities and won enormous audience admiration.

In 2007, the show reached two new international markets. In July, the company performed in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia. A tour of Japan followed in August, including Sapporo, Sendai, Osaka and Fukuoka. A second, five-city tour of Japan is planned for the spring of 2008.

I am heading back to the US for a couple weeks worth of work/meetings, etc and wanted to ship some
books back to China that are currently rotting away in a US storage unit(much like my brain is
rotting away without the books in China ).
The last time I looked into doing this (December of '07) I was disappointed to see that the USPS
no longer did the MBag, or any surface mail, overseas, and only offered airmail.

Has anyone found another method to be workable? I am talking about ~200 lbs of books, 3 large
boxes. Though this could be paired down (and would definitely be if I have to do some variant of
airmail). Got at least another 5-7 years here (minus 6 month time served ) and the thought of
having to order from Amazon once a month when I already have a ton of books in the US waiting to
    be read is heart breaking

I think the USPS has a flat rate box for $38 bucks (priority mailer). No weight limit. Seen people
get the heaviest books into those. I know you said NOT USPS but many don't know about the
flat-rate options. Sorry best I can do.

    889 -

Your airline will charge a fortune for overweight checked luggage: the standard is something like
1 percent of the published first-class fare per kilo.

But most airlines also offer an alternate, usually called something like "unaccompanied baggage,"
that gets shipped as cargo. Usually you have to deliver the stuff yourself to the airline's cargo
terminal the day before you leave, then pick it up and clear customs at the air cargo terminal at
    the other end.

Cost will vary with the airline, but they should be able to give you a quote over the phone. Be
sure to ask about all the surcharges.

    (The $38.95 flat-rate USPS box has a 20-lb limit.)

towards the end where I lost concentration and wasn't too qingchu about one or two things (oh and
I was too lazy to IME all the de's, a bad habit - not cross-checking the IME in general btw. :>).

Hi everyone!! A few days ago, I saw a guy on the train with a tattoo of 獅子座 and was
wondering what this meant. Does it refer to the constellation Leo?

    Thanks

崔少明 was one of the founding contributors to Yazhou Zhoukan, which he left to become the
managing editor of Next Magazine when in started in 1990.

I can't find any references to him in English, but that might be because I'm not searching with
the right terms - how would his name most likely be written?

And I finally found it myself - Tsui Sio-ming (he has a blog on Blogspot which is how I finally

    在德国太阳能已被广泛应用。
In Germany solar energy is been widely used.

Thats my take on the above sentence, but I am not a native speaker nor hardly an expert. However,
I was under the impression that it could only be read as "has been widely used" if the 已 were
replaced by 过. Does "已" denote the present perfect?

    Quest -

    已经 adverb. already
    被...应用 verb. passive. utilized

    skylee -

You cannot replace 已 with 經 in the sentence you quoted. You can however replaced 已 with
    已經. They mean the same.

已 and 已經 mean that something has already happened.

    James Garrison -

Okay, 已经 means the present perfect. I guess since Chinese isn't as strict as English I could
also interpret 已经 as the past simple? 过, however, is always the present perfect, right? How
do 已经 and 过 differ in use?

Argh. I wish grammar had a face so I could slap it, hahaha.

    skylee -

    Take a look ->

    已/已經

    Quote:

    Already: 已經 [yi3jing1]↓;
    已去,已來 already gone, come;
    會已散meeting already closed;
    已久 already a long time;
    已亡 already dead;
已冠 over twenty years of age (“already capped”).

    Quote:

    Used to express a completed action (pr. ’[guo1]): 讀過 have read about it;
    聽說過 have heard of it;
    看見過 have seen it;
    吃過了 have had one's meal;
    打過招呼 have said hello to s.o.;
遞過暗號 have given s.o. a secret signal.

Look at it this way: 已/已經 is an adverb, it is used like "already" in English, and is put
before the verb. 過 is like a suffix to turn a verb to describe a past action, and is put after
    the verb.

    Altair -

    Quote:

Argh. I wish grammar had a face so I could slap it, hahaha.

    Absolutely!

    Quote:

Okay, 已经 means the present perfect. I guess since Chinese isn't as strict as English I could
also interpret 已经 as the past simple? 过, however, is always the present perfect, right? How
do 已经 and 过 differ in use?

I think that terms like "present perfect" and "past simple" apply very well to English, to many
other European languages, and to a few other languages; however, I think these categories are
extremely awkward in reference to Chinese and will cause confusion. There are many different
Chinese structures than can correspond to what we in English call "present perfect" or "past
simple," because Chinese makes different distinctions than we do in English. Neither language is
more strict than the other, they are just strict about different things.

As for 已经 basically meaning "already," I believe this is correct; however, there are
occasional uses where it merely seems to suggest completeness or change and where we would not use
"already" in English. Here is an example of the latter usage:
    清圣祖虽是少年天子、但天资聪慧、机智过人、平素努力学习历代统治经略
已经逐渐成熟。Kangxi (The Qing Emperor Shengzu), although he was a young emperor, was
naturally intelligent and exceptionally resourceful. He usually worked hard in studying the
governing strategies of the past dynasties and gradually matured.

    topics ...hehe

    oh thank you so much!!!!
I didn't know they are called 多音字, so I couldn't search if there were already open thread,
    sorry.

Here is a list in simplified Chinese with 243 (if I count right) 多音字 in doc format -
    常用多音字规范表 ->
    http://www.lbx777.com/ywfj/ywcs/wz/images/cydyz01.doc

I note that 着 and 著 are two separate entries on this list. hmmm ...

    aimee08 -

    thanks skylee, that's perfect

    roddy -

    Attaching two files.

The .doc file is a simple list of the 108 多音字 in the link above suitable for importing into
your preferred flashcard program (although how that flashcard program handles 多音字 is another
    matter).

The .txt is a Plecodict friendly list of all words in the increasingly laggard HSK database which
contain any one of those 多音字. Bear in mind that some 多音字 may only have one
pronunciation within the HSK lists - all of those words will still be included. Eg 单 results in
简单 etc appearing, although the shàn version doesn't.

I would probably have been wiser to use the longer list of 243 to generate this, but I happened to
be looking at the shorter one of 108 when I started thinking about this. If anyone wants to come
up with or find a clean list of the 243 that I can just plug into the database I'll be able to
generate a more complete list of associated words. What also might be useful is a list of
多音字 within the scope of the HSK.

The Pleco format, in case anyone wants to convert it to something else, is just

    // LIST NAME
    CharsPin1yin1
    CharsPin1yin1

    Attaching:
A list of all characters in the 现代汉语常用多音字词例, one entry per pronunciation.
About 300 characters, just under 700 pronunciations. There's a 次常用多音字词例 also,
about one third of the length. Will post that if / when I do it. For reference the
现代汉语常用字表 (ie not just 多音字) is about 2,500 characters, the 次常用 1,000.

It's called a 词例 as there's a third column, with lists of words for each pronunciation, or an
explanation, which I haven't typed in, and don't plan to if importing into Plecodict has decent
results (which is why I have one entry per pronunciation, rather than multiple pronunciations per
    line)

The list does some odd stuff, eg omits huǐ for 会, includes a neutral tone 点 because of 打点
but not for similar words, etc.

that link is invalid for me, even when going through a proxy. Does the page provide characters for
these stance names, and if so are you able to post them here?

imron, Google China possibly disables cache function.

Here is the original text, in Word format:

Like I said, it wasn't working even with a proxy, but the file you provided opens fine, although
    unfortunately it doesn't contain characters.

A quick search on a few Wing Chun sites however reveals that it is the same 馬, so I guess it's
    probably a style-by-style difference, or maybe a north/south difference.

What it's saying is that the current generation will never be able to compare with the last
generation. The way the last generation did it, there make-up and such (I'm paraphrasing) has gone
    and will not come back.

It's kind of like saying it can never be as good as the original.

Hope that makes sense! (does it?)

    wrbt -

Yes that makes sense. Tough idiom to see from the literal, thanks a lot for the help I appreciate
    it.

Learn mandarin - Learn Chinese - FAQ: General Forum Usage

    .

    .

Learn Chinese > FAQ > Learn Mandarin. When you have
finished typing your message, press the [send email] button and your message will be sent
instantly. Note that for privacy reasons, the email address of the recipient is not revealed to
    you during this process.

Note that if you can not find an email button or link for a member, it either means that the
administrator has disabled email functions for this forum, or that the member in question has
specified that they do not wish to receive email from other members of the forum.

Another useful email function is the ability to send a friend a link to a thread you think they
may find interesting. Whenever you view a thread, you will find a link somewhere on the page which
will allow you to send a brief message to anyone you like. Your referrerid is added to the link
you send, so if your friend registers on this forum as a result of viewing the link you sent to
them, your referrals total will automatically be credited!

Registered members may also be able to send messages to other members of this forum using the
private messaging system. For more information about private messaging, click here.

    What is Private Messaging?

If the administrator has enabled the Private Messaging system, registered members may send each
    other private messages.

    Sending Private Messages

Private messages work a little like email, but are limited to registered members of this forum.
You may be able to include vB Code, smilies and images in private messages that you send.

You may send a private message to a member of this forum by clicking the 'Send A Private Message'
link in the private messaging section of your user control panel, or by clicking the button in a
    member's posts.

When you send a message, you have the option to save a copy of the message in your Sent Items
    folder.

    Private Message Folders

By default, you will have two folders in your private message area. These are the Inbox and the
    Sent Items folders.

The Inbox folder contains any new messages you receive, and allows you to view all the messages
you have received, along with the name of the person who sent the message to you, and the date and
    time the message was sent.

The Sent Items folder contains a copy of any messages that you have sent, where you have specified
that you wish to keep a copy of the message for future reference.

You may create additional folders for your messages by clicking the 'Edit Folders' link.

Each folder has a set of message controls which allow you to select messages, then either move
them to one of your custom folders, or delete them completely. You may also have a button which
allows you to forward multiple messages from a folder to another member of the forum.

You will need to periodically delete old messages, as the administrator has probably set a limit
to the number of private messages you can have in your folders. If you exceed the number of
messages specified by the administrator, you will not be able to send or receive new messages
until you delete some old messages.

Whenever you read a message, you will have the option to reply to the message, or forward that
message to another member of the forum. You may also have the ability to forward that message to
multiple members of your buddy list.

    Message Tracking

When you send a new private message, you may have the option to request a read-receipt for that
message. This will allow you to check whether or not a message has been read by its recipient by
viewing the Private Message Tracking page.

This page is divided into two sections: unread messages and read messages.

The unread messages section shows all messages that you have sent with a read-receipt request,
that have not yet been read by their recipient.

The read messages section shows all messages you have sent with a receipt request that have been
read and acknowledged by their recipient. The time that the message was read is also shown.

You may choose to end the tracking on any message you choose by selecting the message and clicking
    the [end tracking] button.

When you receive a message with a read-receipt request, you may have the option to read the
message while denying the read-receipt request. To do this, simply click the 'deny receipt' link
rather than the title of the message, if it appears.

How do I use the Member List?

The member list contains a complete list of all the registered members of this forum. You can view
the member list ordered alphabetically by username, by the date that the member joined the forum,
or by the number of posts the members have made.

The member list also has a search function, which allows you to quickly locate members according
to categories you specify, such as searching for all members who have joined in the past week etc.

How do I use the calendar?

The calendar functions in a way similar to the forums in that there can be multiple calendars. One
calendar could hold just events that you are able to see, while another may list birthdays.

There are two types of events on the calendar: normal events and recurring events.

Normal Events span the time frame from when the event starts until the event ends.

Recurring Events repeat over a set period of time based on certain criteria. Examples would be an
event that occurs on the first Monday of every month and an event that occurs every Monday and
    Wednesday.

The administrator may have enabled registered members to post events, but usually this is not the
case. You can most likely post your own private events that are only viewable to you.

Birthdays may be shown on the calendar if the administrator has enabled this feature. Your
birthday will automatically be shown on the calendar if you have entered the date of your birthday
in your profile. Note: if you do not enter the year of your birth when you edit your profile, your
age will not be shown on the calendar.

If you enter your birthday, your name will also appear on the main forum page when it is your
    birthday.

    What are announcements?

Announcements are special messages posted by the administrator or moderators. They are designed to
be a simple one-way communication with the users. If you wish to discuss announcements, you will
have to create a new thread in the forum, since you cannot reply to announcements.

How do I rate a thread?

You may find a small menu on thread pages which allows you to 'rate this thread' with a number
    between 1-5.

Casting a vote for threads you view is entirely optional, but if you think that the thread is
superb, you might rate it as a 5-star thread, or if you think that it's unspeakably dismal, you
might choose to rate the thread with a single star.

Once enough votes have been cast for the thread rating, you may see a set of stars appear with the
title of the thread in the thread listings. These stars reflect the average vote cast, and can
allow you to quickly see which threads are worth reading if you are on a very busy forum with a
    lot of threads.

    What are referrals?

The administrator may have enabled referrals, which allows you to be credited for any new users
    you invite to the forum.

You gain referrals by promoting Learn Chinese using your unique referral link. The link you
should use as your referral link is this:

    http://www.Learn Chinese/forums.php?referrerid=0

Each time someone follows this link to Learn Chinese and registers as a new member, your
referral count will be incremented by one. The number of referrals you have can be viewed in your
    profile.

Your administrator will have more information on any prizes or rewards that may be given out for
referrals. Please be courteous when promoting Learn Chinese by not spamming other web sites
with your referral link just to gain referrals.

What are the various thread display options?
When viewing a thread, you will be able to view the thread from a choice of four modes.

    1. Linear Mode (Oldest First) - In this mode, posts are displayed chronologically from oldest
to newest. Posts are shown in a flat mode so that many posts can be viewed simultaneously.
    2. Linear Mode (Newest First) - This is the same as the above mode, except that posts are
ordered in an opposite way (newest first).
    3. Threaded Mode - In this mode, a tree is shown along with every post. This tree allows you to
see the relationship each post has to others, in terms of who responded to whom. Only one post
    is shown at a time.
    4. Hybrid Mode - This mode is a mixture of the linear and threaded modes. The post tree is
displayed like in the threaded mode, but multiple posts are displayed simultaneously like in
    the linear modes.

Where can I find the RSS feed?

The administrator may have enabled RSS syndication, this allows you to view newly created threads
in guest viewable forums without visiting the board.

The feeds are currently provided in two formats, RSS and RSS v2. The differences are as follows:

    * RSS 0.91 - This feed is based on a standard written by netscape and provides a link and the
    title of the thread.
    http://www.Learn Chinese/external.php?type=rss
    * RSS 2.0 - This feed contains title, author, date and the contents of the first post of the
    thread.
    http://www.Learn Chinese/external.php?type=rss2

To add this to MyYahoo click here.

The forums to which this applies can also be limited to specific guest viewable forums by adding
another parameter to the URL containing the forumids as follows:
    http://www.Learn Chinese/external.php?type=rss2&forumids=123

If you would like the content to be generated for multiple forums you can separate the forumids by
    commas.
