Hi, I'm in Beijing but will be going to BNU in spring of 2008. Looking at housing I already missed
the nicer international dorms. Any advice on whether it's better/cheaper to go off campus?
    Thanks!

Depends how long you're there for. If it's just one semester you're probably better off staying in
dorms. No3 is expensive, but as you can't stay there anyway, the other dorms won't cost much more,
if anything, than renting a decent studio.

If you want to share with someone then yes, renting your own place would work out a bit cheaper.
You'll need to fight to get a short let though.

If you want to stay two semesters then dorms might be a very bad idea. You'll get thrown out over
the summer and, at a guess, private rooms will be hard to find.

Finally have enough hanzi recognition to follow (some of the) subtitles and now would like to have
a transcript too if possible. Can anyone point me to a transcript of any of the "记忆之称“
episodes? All up i think there are 34 parts; apart from learning some history, it's also a great
way to improve listening and reading skills.

    Xi'Er Dun -

I have a question about the Unihan Database by Unicode, it regards the amount of
Chinese-Japanese-Korean-(Vietnamese) [CJK (V)] Characters (ie. Hanzi, Kanji, Hanja, Chữ Nôm/
Hán Tự/ Chữ Hán) included in the encoding Unihan Database Unicode character set(s).
How many CJK Characters (ie. Hanzi-Traditional 繁體漢字 and Simplified 简体汉字,
Kanji-Kyuujitai/Shinjitai 舊字體/新字体 漢字, Hanja 漢字, Chữ Nôm 字喃/ Hán
Tự漢字/ Chữ Hán字漢) are included in the general Unihan Database, and how many are
there in the Unihan extended database(s) too?
Does the Unihan Database include all Characters that are entries in Morohashi Dai-Kan-Wa-Jiten
大漢和辭典, Cihai Zidian 辭海字典, Kangxi Zidian 康熙字典, Hanyu-Da-Zidian
    漢語大字典, etc.

Is there a Unicode Unihan expert on this forum, if so could they please answer my questions?

    謝謝您

I'm not sure what you mean by the extended database. Unihan is just one big collection of chinese
characters. Perhaps you are confusing this with the Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP) and the
Supplementary Multlingual plane (SMP)? Altogether though, the Unihan database contains information
for 71226 unique code points (and obviously, some code points have more information than others).

Regarding the dictionaries you mention, I'm not sure if Unihan contains all the entries from those
dictionaries, however it does list information about the dictionaries it uses.

If you visit this page, it lists dictionary indice information for all the dictionaries used to
compile/cross-check the database. Following the link to a given dictionary will tell you how many
dictionary indices exist in Unihan database for that dictionary. Therefore there will be at least
that many characters in the database from that dictionary and possibly more (I say at least,
because the information is listed as provisional and so might not be complete).

E.g There are dictionary indices for 55812 characters from the 汉语大词典 Hanyu Da Cidian,
    70205 from the Kangxi etc.

Suffice to say, regardless of whether it contains all the characters in those dictionaries, Unihan
is almost certainly the most comprehensive database of CJK characters.

    trevelyan -

I'm under the impression it doesn't contain all of the entries in the 康熙字典, although the
    missing entries are mostly variants.

    My attempt -

Having exhausted all the propaganda manoeuvres in the background which the Communist Party was so
good at in the past, Chen Shui Bian was yet to be brought down. The disappointment was obvious in
the statement on the current cross-strait relations made by Taiwan Affairs Office of CPC Central
Committee and Taiwan Affairs Office of State Council on 15 May. The statement "The Chinese people
are not afraid of ghosts, nor will they be intimidated by brutal force" showed clearly the dilemma
faced by Beijing at that time.

Here's a tread that could be useful to many foreigners in Hong Kong:

    Post your boyfriend/girlfriend vocabulary here!

Stuff like sweet phrases to say to your other half, pet nicknames, flirts, suggestive sentences,
    etc.

It would be great if you could post stuff the locals would use, rather than just the chinese
translations of english vocabulary. (but if you know at least the translations thats still cool
    too).

Looking forward to see what you guys come up with.

    translations Pretty boy! Pretty gal!

pretty much a phrase to get some attention of someone but it works kinda as a flirt too. Its
literal meaning is the same as well like 她很靓女(She's hot!) but you say it as "she's very".

only use it in cantonese cuz i only hear this phrase in cantonese and xinhui but xinhui is pretty
much similair to cantonese. anyway it's safe to use it in Guangdong i think ('-'?)

Wouldn't you say: 佢好靚 ? I know it's not proper (Mandarin) writing, but would be said this
    way in Cantonese, right?

    zozzen -

佢好靚 is a common phrase in Cantonese.

Besides many names for boy and girls, measure words can be confusing and complicated to many
non-natives. The measure word for boy/ girl can be 個﹐ 條, 位﹐ 名, each would make
    different meanings.

    我個女 = my daughter
    我條女 = my girlfriend
    這位女士 = This lady
    該名女子 = That female

It depends on the tones and context. My friends burst into tears with laugh when we heard an
American use this phrase to show off his Cantonese. No matter it's rude or not, it's very common
phrase among youngesters and gang members.

    skylee -

gangsters ... people i know say 我女朋友 or 我個女朋友.

    zozzen -

    [q]Why is it rude? I don't understand[/q]

One possible reason is that the the measure word "條" implies a girlfriend is a sex toy and it
could be offensive, sometimes, depending on the context and tones. In movies, people often refer
    the prostitute as "條女". E.g. "條女唔掂呀﹐ 換個條畀我! " ( This (條) girl isn't
    good. Show me another one!)

Feminists should be pleased that equal rights has been widespread in hong kong, so young girls
also refer their boyfriend as "條仔". Go-go boys can also be "條仔". "爸爸生﹐
    今日我要狂歡﹐ 搵條仔畀我﹐ 要有六舊腹肌! "

    Hi-

I am translating something for a company, and in their company description they put forth this
    management "motto" :

    "以人为本,精简节约,创新高效" 管理方法

I was wondering if anyone had some helpful suggestions for making this sound good in translation.
I get the meaning of course, but I am never certain how to best translate these kinds of mottos.
My own inclination is to translate it as simply as possible: something like "People first. Cut
costs. Innovate." But I fear I am cutting out too much.

Thanks in advance for any help. I really appreciate it.

Perhaps you could consider something like -

    People
    Economy
    Creativity
    Efficiency

    PECE

    Han-tiger -

    以人为本 people-centered / people-oriented
    精简节约 simplification & economization
    创新高效 innovation & efficiency

    Southernjohn -

Thanks Han-tiger but the difficulty here isn't the meaning, but writing an acceptable english
translation. I like Skylee's approach and I will suggest it to the client. An acronym of some kind
could be an effective way to translate this sort of Chinese motto. Of course.. you have to explain
the acronym, but the end effect is similar. Anyway, discussion with client will be necessary.

    southernjohn

    Han-tiger -

That can be very difficult. I just showed you a direct translation. Maybe it is good to make some
alteration or adjustment of these mottos first.

    Tom Higgins -

    Quote:

    以人为本 people-centered / people-oriented
    精简节约 simplification & economization
    创新高效 innovation & efficiency

That's already very good and DIRECT translation already.

    Southernjohn -

yes yes I know. But I was looking for advice at making this a more copy-friendly motto. An "exact"
    translation is easy.

    Gulao -

One of my classmates in high school wrote Chinese left handed, and didn't seem to have much
trouble. From time to time she would ask if it were possible to fix a character's stroke order to
make the character more natural for her, but for the most part it wasn't necessary.

    DoraYao -

I am left-handed too and have no problem with strokes.

    renzhe -

I write left-handed too, and use the proper stroke order.

Since I'm close to ambidextrous (can write a with my right hand and the left-right preference is
almost split down the middle with me, depending on the task at hand), I have considered learning
to write Chinese characters right-handed, but it seemed too silly considering that I write
everything else with my left hand.

The characters will probably look a bit different. Right-handed horizontal strokes tend to slope
slightly upward, which is difficult to reproduce with the left hand, and that's one example. But
it really doesn't play that much of a role, you can write well with the left hand too.

Perhaps one day, I'll try to write with my right hand too. It's quite funny, I can write the Latin
alphabet with my right hand, it just looks a bit uglier and takes a bit longer, but I have no
difficulty doing it -- though I have spent very little time practicing this. I can also take a
left-handed guitar and play chords and scales although I have never practiced this either. I think
that left-handed people find it easier to do things with both hands than right-handed people.
Perhaps because so many things in our lives are designed for right-handed people, so we get ample
    practice.

    fireball9261 -

I am right-handed, and I always smudged my writings in the traditional ways (up and down, then
right to left) when I was a kid. So I always wished to be left-handed.

    JimmySeal -

I'm left handed and I started learning to write Asian characters about 8 years ago. It has never
been a problem when writing with a pencil or pen, but I've found it all but impossible to make
characters look good when using a brush or long-tipped pen. In those cases, the push vs. pull
    distinction really comes into play.

I started brush-calligraphy classes last February and I use my right hand exclusively for those. I
just feel there's no other way.

I would suggest at least encouraging your daughter to try writing with her right hand every now
and then. Right-handedness is a very useful skill in the 漢字文化圏.

I'm also in favor of using the correct stroke order, no matter which hand she's using to write.

    Hero Doug -

It's a little off topic now, but in response to the many people who are saying don't worry about
stroke order, I'm going to say the exact opposite, I'm joining the other's who say it's important.

I read an excellent summary on here (can't find who wrote) about stroke order.

Get a pen and paper, and write the letter a (lowercase).

From what we've been taught, we start at the top, round down and to the left to make the belly,
and go up and down at the right to make the straight edge.

Write it again, but this time start at the top and make the straight edge first, then make the
    rounded belly last.

They'll both be legible, but the first one (that is done naturally) will look better.

After I bought a program to teach stroke order I saw noticeable improvement instantly.

For these reasons I'd avoid encouraging your daughter to invent her own stroke order.

    renzhe -

I absolutely disagree with imposing a stroke order on the Latin characters.

First of all, it definitely depends on your handedness. Such "rules" for right-handed people
result in difficult writing patterns for left-handed people, especially when writing fast.

Secondly, different places have different conventions. There are numerous ways to write Latin
characters. The Romans didn't leave instructions on which stroke comes first, or in which
direction it should go. I guarantee you that the "proper stroke order" some people teach in
Germany is completely different than the one taught in the US or France, or even in a different
school in a different city. They are all arbitrary. A character written in a different order looks
    different, it doesn't look WRONG.

Chinese characters are obviously different, for reasons such as brush calligraphy, stroke count
    and stroke-order dictionary lookup, etc.

    Hero Doug -

The point of my post wasn't about writing Latin characters, it was about writing Chinese
    characters.

I used an 'a' because everyone here is reading and writing English, so everyone should be familier
    with the letter 'a'.

Secondly, I posted that to illustrate that if you write something in a different order then it's
usually written in, then you may end up with something that looks different then it should. What
it should look like, if what you say is true, is subjective. I was obvisouly writing that from my
    perspective.

But as far as I know, in China the children are taught how to write characters one of a few ways.
So if you also learn how to write characters in one of those ways then chances are that Chinese
people won't have as much trouble reading what you write because it fit's one of the standards.

And I'm saying the same thing holds true for Latin letters, or any other way of writing, the more
you deviate from the standard the harder it is going to be to read what you write.

    dannydy -

i'm also a leff-handed,it seemed wouldnt have much problem for me to writing the order of the
chinese character stroke. But in fact, the earlier of writing character on the paper was from left
    side to right side.

    skylee -

    Quote:

but the guy at your workplace who stares at a girls picture all day drooling over it, even if they
are just friends you can say he is 谈恋爱

Well I think you can only say he is drooling. Or 單戀 / 單相思. I think 戀愛 is to be in
love. No it is not to court. 談戀愛 shows how we value communication between two people who are
    in love.

    muyongshi -

Well that was supposed to be the more his friends poking fun at him as he is 发呆ing due to his
    utter love for 某某

    Luobot -

    Definition of Courtship:
"A man pursuing a woman until she catches him."
    ...

As a stand alone definition, ChinesePod has --
    tánliànài
    谈恋爱
    to fall in love

In their examples, however, the given translation within context is "dating" or "seeing someone,"
    as in the following --

    父母反对他谈恋爱的原因是怕谈恋爱耽误了学习。
Fùmǔ fǎnduì tā tánliànài de yuányīnshì pà tánliànài dānwu le xuéxí.
The reason his parents are opposed to his dating is that they are afraid it will affect his
    studies.

So I would assume that the definition depends on context.

The literal translation, to talk love, agrees with Skylee's emphasis on communication. Of course,
it takes a woman to understand those things without a dictionary.

    [top]Default MS Pinyin IME 3.0

All Windows computers come with the capability for this, however, you may have to install it. To
do this on Windows XP, follow these steps:

Go to the Start Menu, and click on Control Panel. If it's not there, it should be under Settings.

In the Control Panel Window, if it says "Pick a Category" in big letters, then click on 'Date,
Time, Language and Regional Settings', then click on 'Regional and Language Options'.

If it does not show this, then click on 'Regional and Language Options'.

You should now have a dialog box that says 'Regional and Language Options' at the top, with three
tabs - 'Regional Options', Languages and Advanced.

    Click on the 'Languages' tab.

There should be an area down towards the bottom of the dialog box that says 'Supplemental language
support'. If the 'Install files for East Asian Languages' box does not have a tick in it, select
it, and click the 'apply' button in the lower right hand corner. This may require you to insert
    your Windows XP CD.

Once that's done, click on the 'Details' button, which is in the same dialog box.

That should bring up a new dialog box called 'Text Services and Input Languages'.

From here, click on the 'Add' button on the right hand side of the list, where the list will
display whatever language + keyboard combination you are currently using.

You should now see yet another dialog box called 'Add Input Language'.

Click on the box which is not greyed out and currently shows a language (Mine shows English New
Zealand, as that's the language of my operating system). Select Chinese (PRC).

This will automatically select Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0. Select OK.

That will close the dialog box. Select apply. You should now see the language bar somewhere on
your screen, in all likelihood, down in the bottom right hand corner, near the taskbar, or in the
upper right hand corner of the screen. It will be a simple blue bar, which should have the letters
'EN' on it. It may also appear in the taskbar.

When you have found the language bar, open a new document somewhere (e.g. start -> run -> notepad)
and select the EN on the language bar. Click on Chinese PRC. Congratulations! You can now type
    Chinese on your computer!

If any of the instructions above do not work, then please post on the forums and ask for help.

    [top]Wubi[1]

Follow the following steps to get Wubizixing working under Windows XP:
    * Download the ime_gen.zip and wubi.zip files attached to this thread. (NOTE: wubi.zip is
currently not attached due to being too large).
    * Copy the contents the directory 'ImeGen5' to C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 (assuming C:\ is where Windows
      is installed to)
    * Copy the .MB file for the method to C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32
    * Check that there is no .IME file with the same name as the one you want. If so, erase it.
    * Launch the program IMEGEN.EXE
    * Go to the second tab. Click on the (O) button at the top.
    * Select the .MB file for the desired IME.
    * Click on the bottom button (R), and a .TXT file is created
    * Go to the first tab. Click on the (W) button at the top. Select the .TXT file which was
      created during the previous step.
    * Click on the third button (C) from the bottom, and a box will open.
    * Click on the first button (K) at the bottom.
    * A box opens speaking about BITMAPs. Click OK
    * A box opens speaking about ICONs. Click OK
    * Answer yes to the final question to install the new IME.
    * Finished! A new IME is available in the list at the icon at the bottom right in the taskbar.

input methods that are not found in Apple’s built-in set and better suit the needs of Windows
    “switchers.”

    [top]Biaoyin and Biauyin

Biaoyin is a pinyin input for Simplified Characters and Biauyin is for Traditional Character
input. These plug-ins to your pre-existing Input methods on Macintosh will allow you to type
Pinyin with the tone marks. All you have to do is type in the pinyin with the tone (designated by
a number) and it does the rest.
    Both Plug-ins are available here

    [top]Fun Input Toy, FIT

Fun Input Toy(FIT) is a neat open source Chinese input method, which is able to save you some
bucks but still provide as many features as QIM under Macintosh OS. Fun Input Toy comes with
pinyin, double pinyin, and wu bi xing styles of input.

    [top]Linux System

    [top]Smart Common Input Method, SCIM

SCIM is a general input method for UNIX-like systems, which has a good smart-pinyin based Chinese
input method (traditional and simplified). It is integrated in many modern distributions and works
with all modern GTK and KDE/Qt-based applications.

    [1] Related Thread

[2] Note: All Macintosh's running OS X come pre-installed with both Traditional and Simplified
Input Methods, however the pre-installed input methods are significantly inferior to many modern
    input methods.

One of the current "views" of the difference in the two characters about how to define the
difference as the language is being developed is 做 is the verb 作 will be used in a noun form.
You can see this in many situations already... 做饭,做事,vs. 工作,写作 but here is
where another distiction would come in. Words like 创作 and 制作 are verbs but because there
are 双音 they would use 作. That is a theory that is being proposed and discussed.

    靓仔!!, 靓女!! =P
    translations Pretty boy! Pretty gal!

pretty much a phrase to get some attention of someone but it works kinda as a flirt too. Its
literal meaning is the same as well like 她很靓女(She's hot!) but you say it as "she's very".

only use it in cantonese cuz i only hear this phrase in cantonese and xinhui but xinhui is pretty
much similair to cantonese. anyway it's safe to use it in Guangdong i think ('-'?)

    我個女 = my daughter
    我條女 = my girlfriend
    這位女士 = This lady
    該名女子 = That female

It depends on the tones and context. My friends burst into tears with laugh when we heard an
American use this phrase to show off his Cantonese. No matter it's rude or not, it's very common
phrase among youngesters and gang members.

gangsters ... people i know say 我女朋友 or 我個女朋友.

New here, hi all. I've racked my brain trying to do this translation, and it all is too awkward to
me to translate, why I don't know. If you could help with a couple sentences, I'd appreciate. I'll
show you the non-sense I've come up with...

    北京领导人胡锦涛筹画近一年的对台斗争策略终于登台亮相,其运作轮廓正

    眼镜。

The document Beijing's leader, Hu Jintao, has prepared for close to a year finally takes the
stage. His operation outlines emerge one after the other, although these are still only a small
part, but flexibility has made many observers unsuccessful. [complete non-sense]

completely uninhibited. There's a saying, "Chinese people can't fear ghosts, they don't believe in

I don't even understand the last part. As you can see, I have a small indication of what in the

Having exhausted all the propaganda manoeuvres in the background which the Communist Party was so
